Open Day at Fontenebro
Fontenebro International School is part of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) Eco-schools programme and was awarded the Green Flag in 2017 in recognition of its environmental commitment. This achievement reflects an ongoing process of awareness, action and continuous improvement involving students, teachers and families. Sustainability is embedded in learning through the Green Learning programme, which runs across all educational stages.
Eco Patrol
A student group that promotes the responsible use of school resources, supports environmental guidelines and proposes sustainability initiatives to the Senior Leadership Team, fostering leadership, participation and commitment to improving the school environment.
Outdoor learning
Outdoor learning is promoted through the use of the natural environment as a valuable educational resource. This approach strengthens students’ connection with nature, supports experiential learning and helps develop environmental values in a meaningful, real-world context.
Environmental clean-up
Waste collection activities are organised in collaboration with the City Council. These initiatives strengthen students’ environmental awareness and encourage their direct involvement in protecting the local environment.
School composting
Compost is produced using organic waste from the dining room. This initiative helps close the waste cycle, reduce environmental impact and teach students sustainable processes they can apply in their everyday lives.
School gardens
Students create and maintain their own school gardens. Through this hands-on activity, they learn about sustainability, healthy eating and respect for natural cycles.
LED energy efficiency
Traditional lighting is being progressively replaced with LED technology across different areas of the school, helping to achieve a significant reduction in energy consumption.
Water saving
Flow reducers have been installed in taps, reducing water consumption by up to 86% and promoting the responsible use of this essential resource.
Use of natural light
Spaces have been reconfigured by removing physical barriers to maximise natural light, reducing electricity consumption and improving wellbeing in the classroom.
Chimpanzee sponsorship
Through a collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute, the school sponsors a chimpanzee, helping students learn more about biodiversity conservation and species protection.
Solar energy
Solar panels have been installed to generate clean energy and help avoid COâ‚‚ emissions. The school is fully self-sufficient during the summer and covers a significant proportion of its annual energy consumption through renewable energy.
Eco-school committee
A teaching team across all school stages is responsible for designing and implementing sustainability projects throughout the academic year, ensuring environmental education is integrated across the curriculum.
Code of good conduct
To embed sustainable habits in everyday school life through clear guidelines that promote water and energy saving, as well as reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

To help students understand the impact of waste and develop responsible habits based on reducing, reusing and recycling.
